O’Callaghan “Recent Excavations Underneath the Vatican Crypts” (The Biblical Archaeologist 12, 1949), and “Vatican Excavations and the Tomb of St. Peter” (The Biblical Archaeologist 16.4, 1953). Exquisitely illustrated. All the photographic plates and illustrations are printed in coloured or tinted collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. - - First Spanish edition. A visual celebration, combining excellent photography, superb printing, and a sensitive editor’s eye. The fine technique of gravure printing (Kupfertiefdruck, Rakeltiefdruck), developed by Karl Klic (1841-1927), is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure, terms which describe another process. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s, and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not, however, until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing, began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process, but kept it secret rather than patenting it, and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards.

Third volume. Complete set of 110 original collotype plates, numbered 206-315, printed on 43 single-sheet leaves. Including “Table des planches”. Each plate titled and captioned. All placed in portfolio (probably not original), hardcover, cloth backed boards with ties, gilt spine, shelf label, bit worn. Plates are in general fine condition, overall beautifully well preserved. Now in pH-balanced, acid-free Renaissance archival paper.
- - A most beautiful collection. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Exceedingly scacre. OCLC 48122623 lists just 6 copies worldwide. However, only 5 copies are present and only 4 of them are complete. KVK adds just a single copy, that in Union Catalog of Canada. Not in National Library of France, French Union Catalog, nor Union Catalog Italy.

Studied law and classics in Amsterdam and Leiden but became interested in archaeology during a stay in Paris. He was appointed first director of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities and first professor of archaeology in the Netherlands (Leiden University, 1818-1835). It was Reuvens who transformed the mediocre archaeological cabinet of Leiden University to the National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands. Backed by King William I, he acquired the successive collections of De Lescluze, Cimba, and Anastasi, as well as numerous classical collections. Among his books are “Epimetrum de quibusdam monumentis cum Pollionis historia conjunctis” (1820); and “Periculum animadversionum archaeologicarum ad cippos Punicos Humbertianos Musei Antiquarii Lugduno-Batavi” (1822). Antoine-Jean Letronne (1787-1848) was a French archaeologist, director of the Ecole des Chartes, and inspector-general of the University of France. In 1831 he became professor of history in the College de France, a chair he exchanged in 1838 for that of archaeology. In 1840 he became the keeper of the national archives. Scarce. A large photographic negative (50 X 30 cm sheet) and a contact-print made from this, apparently an old reproduction of an original papyrus, are loosely inserted.

- - Contains the three Letters. I: Papyrus bilingues; II: Monument en marbre; III: Papyrus grecs. With the Appendix: Papyrus bilingue, et livre magique, postérieurement reçus. Caspar Jacob Christiaan Reuvens (1793-1835), Dutch Egyptologist. Also known as Caspari Jacobi Christiani Reuvens, Gaspard Jacob Chrétien Reuvens, Casparus Jacobus Christianus Reuvens, and Kaspar Jakob Christian Reuvens. Scarce.

- - First edition. A remarkable production. The wonderful photographic plates and text illustrations are printed in tinted collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. (Note: a heavy set, over 10 KG).
