5 JEWISH VILLAGES IN ISRAEL. [ATLAS AND GAZETTEER]. JERUSALEM, Jewish National Fund, 1949.
Crown 8vo. Pp. xxiv, 191. Plus map section of 10 maps, printed in 2 colours on both sides of 5 sheets (4 of which extending), and a single-page Key to Symbols, all printed on heavy paper bound at rear; index. With an introduction, facts and figures, glossary, and list of towns and cities. Printed, uncommonly, on a watermark paper. With an insert of additional names. Original stiff wrappers, lettered in black. In a very good condition. (Some yellowing to wraps, small chip to head of lower cover close to spine, some light pencil marking to upper cover.) An excellent copy, bright and clean, with all maps present and well preserved.
The book, which lists 373 Jewish villages in Israel is a revised edition of the mimeographed pamphlet published in 1948 while Jerusalem was under siege. The present edition has been brought up to date until the end of March, 1949. Each entry provides schematically general information such as type of settlement, area, population, and date of establishment, but goes further to provide historical background of the settlers, the settlement in relation to the region and the war, current occupation, and more. Published during a state of emergency, the publishers, Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemeth Leisrael) withheld certain details relating to the settlements described. These omissions include the exact location of new villages. For security reasons population figures have been given only as at the end of 1947. Final names of a number of new villages were still to be determined, and in those cases provisional names have been listed. A remarkable undertaking in a most unlikely period, and a great witness to the settlement activities of the JNF during the early days of the State of Israel. Scarce. ADDED: a small map, in colour, identifying 130 new villages established from January 1948 till October 1949.

First edition. Command Paper 3530, presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to Parliament by Command of His Majesty. It includes a detailed narrative of the events, the difficulties inherent in the Mandate, defence and security, analysis of the causes of the outbreak of violence, and conclusions. Scarce historical document and a fascinating reading into the early days of the Land of Israel. ADDED: The Jewish Agency for Palestine “Memorandum on the ‘report of the Commission on the Palestine Disturbances of August 1929,’” London, 1930. (Original lettered wrappers, pp. 112, with side notes). Submitted to the Secretary-General of the League of Nations, the Memorandum’s purpose was to subject the Report to a critical analysis. It provides such analysis on the nature and causes of the disturbances, and tries to give an answer to the question of premeditation. It questions the refusal to arm Jews and the decision to disarm Jewish Special Constables and to remove sealed armouries from Jewish colonies particularly at times when they were most needed. Important historical document in a very good condition, in a scarce combination with the main Report.

- - First edition. Douglas V. Duff’s copy, with a manuscript leaf of his book “Sword for Hire” loosely inserted. Commander Douglas Valder Duff (1901-1978) joined the Palestine Police in 1922, after serving with the Royal Irish Constabulary, and became the commander of the Jerusalem police force. He wrote some 100 books in his lifetime, drawing heavily on his experiences. During the 1930’s his focus was very much on Palestine, describing the people and the places that he had come to know so well. The manuscript is machine-typed on thin paper. It is titled: “Sword for Hire, by Douglas V. Duff. Copy.” Tension regarding the question of the status quo in the holy places escalated and the ensuing violence resulted on August 1929 in riots, with hundreds of casualties on both Arab and Jewish sides. The British sent in a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the “disturbances”. The Commission, headed by Sir Walter Shaw, former Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements, arrived in Palestine in October that same year and remained there for two months. Shaw’s Report was shortly thereafter presented by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to the British Parliament. It contains a detailed narrative of the events of August 1929; the difficulties inherent in the Mandate, defence and security; analysis of the causes of the outbreak of violence, and conclusions. A scarce historical document with a most interesting provenance.
