- - The present Berlin edition, printed by Johannes Andreas Rüdigerus, was preceded by the Antwerp editions of 1615 and 1627 (Beller), and followed by the enlarged, 1738 Amsterdam edition (Schagen).

Plus a 13th such plate, this with allegorical illustration, concluding the suit. Plus 12 copperplate leaves, each with 12 illustrations of coins, printed on recto only. Main title-page printed in red and black. Footnotes. Hardcover, wide-margined copy, uncut, bound in contemporary quarter red calf and marbled boards, raised bands, corner-tips bit worn; spine surface rubbed off, dye practically gone. In fine internal condition. Exceptionally bright interior; crisp plates.

- - The first and only enlarged edition of this work. Beautifully illustrated, this edition has an extended number of plates with a total of 912 coin impressions on 76 copperplates; 2 engraved frontispieces, one engraved bust portrait, and a remarkable suite of 13 exquisite emperor portraits, engraved by C. de Passe after Johannes Stradanus (Jan van der Straeten, 1523-1605). The work went through several editions, was first printed in Antwerp in 1615 and 1627 (Beller); later in Berlin in 1705 (Rüdiger). In 1738 publisher Martin Schagen got the publishing rights and issued the present copy. He could now reset the entire work and print it in elegant quarto format, add the Johannes Stradanus suite of portraits, extra suite of coin illustrations, and allow the plates the freedom to remain bound separately from the text. The edition was printed on handsome laid paper with ample margins, and the strikes of the plates are remarkably more beautiful than these of their predecessors.

- - Rare first edition of Burman’s acclaimed of a treatise on coins of Cyrrhus. Collated in accordance with the Oxford University copy. Part of title transliterated from Greek. Pieter Burman the Elder [Peter Burmannus Secundus], (1668-1741) was Dutch classicist and philologists. Gisbert Cuper (1644-1716). Provenance: from the private collection of J. B. Vervliet, with his numismatic bookplate. Scarce.

(iv), iv, (ii), 82, plus 2 fold-out copperplates with 21 impressions of coins (Rois de Thrace); iv, 88 (plus 2 divisional titles not included in the pagination), plus 4 copperplates with 44 impressions of coins (Rois du Bosphore). Woodcut head-pieces, initials, and title-page device. Half-title present. Shoulder notes. First 19 leaves have a hole (rodent activity?) at upper corner, not affecting text (repaired in first few leaves). A wide margined copy, bound in plain card wrappers, spine worn and loosening. A good copy, handsome plates.

- - First edition. The work contains two books bound in one, the second book, Dissertation, includes three parts: Preliminaire sur l’ere du Bosphore; Histoire des rois du Bosphore Cimmerien; IIIe Dynastie des rois du Bosphore Cimmerien. A second edition appeared in 1756, and was issued together with “Des Herrn Cary Geschichte der Könige von Thracien und vom cimmerischen Bosporo, erleutert aus den Münzen” by Siegmund Jacob Baumgarten. Hardcover, handsomely bound in contemporary full polished calf, spine with raised bands, compartments richly decorated in gilt, black morocco label lettered in gilt, gilt panelled sides, joints neatly mended but very tender; marbled endpapers, sprinkled edges; few leaves somewhat marginally stained. Overall a very handsome, large paper copy.

Two parts in one volume. Crown quarto (260 x 205mm). Pp. 171; 90 numbered copperplate leaves, printed on recto only, with a total of ca. 350 medal impressions. Half-title, decorative additional title-page, 2 title-pages, one to each part; minute stain at utmost top margin of two leaves. Hardcover, bound in half calf and marbled boards (rubbed and chafed), spine richly gilt. Excellent interior in fine condition.

- - First edition. Not in Cicognara, Chamberlin, Winchell, Vinet, Brunet, Graesse, etc. The catalogue was published in 8 volumes, each complete in itself. The entire collection was engraved by François Anne David (1741-1824), who acted also as the publisher. The explanatory text to the present volume was provided by Sylvain Maréchal. François Valentin Mulot wrote the text to the other volumes. The plates, beautifully preserved in the present copy, are printed on heavy paper, each with four large impressions; few plates have each one or two impressions.

With about 550 impressions of coins, beautifully engraved on copper and printed on the letterpress, and about 90 other such illustrations, mostly full-page, depicting military dress and accoutrement, army manoeuvre, drill, fortifications, etc., as well as other, civil subjects. Title-page printed in red and black, with illustrated device. Woodcut initials, shoulder notes; few leaves bit marginally soiled, repair for a tear without loss. Hardcover, bound in contemporary full calf, beautifully rebacked and with new leather on corners, spine with raised bands, gilt fleuron stamped in four compartments, gilt lettering in remainder, all edges sprinkled. Overall an excellent copy with fine, strong strikes of plates.

- - First Latin edition. COPAC lists some copies with added engraved title-page, dated 1685, not present here. Du Choul’s Classical work on ancient Roman coinage, religion, and army. First published in French in 1555. Lipsius p. 82.

Hardcover, bound in full pale calf, rebacked, panelled sides roll-tooled in blind, floral corner-pieces, rubbed and chafed in places, spine with raised bands, endpapers bit creased, few brown spots. A very good copy in fine internal condition.

- - Lipsius p. 422. Cf. Cicognara 3054, listing the first edition of 1555. Vico Enea (1523-1567). A native of Parma, he worked mostly in Florence. Published “Augustarum imagines aereis formis expressae”. Provenance: The Samuel Weare Gardiner’s (1821-1866) copy(?), with the armorial bookplate bearing the motto of the Order of the Garter “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (“Shame upon him who thinks evil of it”), mounted onto first pastedown; and with the heraldic bookplate of the Deene Library, “En grace affie” (“On grace depend”), mounted onto verso of title-page. Both plates, finely engraved on copper, are of particular charm.

- - First and only edition. Abbot Joseph Ghesquière’s (1731-1802) treatise on early Dutch coins, including Belgium and Luxemburg. In 1779 his “Dissertation de M. l’Abbé Ghesquière,... sur les différens genres de médailles antiques, ou examen critique des ‘Nouvelles recherches sur la science des médailles’ par M. Poinsinet de Sivry,...” was published in Nivelles by E. Plon. Scarce. KVK locates copies in National Library of the Netherlands, French Union Catalog, and Union Catalog Southwest Germany only. COPAC adds Oxford, Scotland, Cambridge, and British Library. No copies found in Library of Congress, German National Library, Swiss National Library, nor Union Catalog Italy. Not in Lipsius. Handsome engraved device to title-page; two decorative initials, corner-tip of one leaf neatly restored, minute blemishes elsewhere. Hardcover, bound in contemporary full vellum, laced boards, spine gilt, small paper restoration to first paste-down, all edges dyed aquamarine. Uniformly browned due to stock quality, else a very good copy.

- - Goltzius (Venlo 1526 - Bruges 1583) sketched the contents of over a thousand collections of coins, developing his drawings into a series of thematic and biographical studies in ancient history. His work laid the groundwork for the systematic study of numismatics. His publishing career began in 1557, with the publication of Vivae Imagines, and ended in 1579, when he published the first edition of the “Thesaurus rei antiquariae Huberrimus”. Much of his work, however, was left unpublished, and it was Jacob de Bie of Antwerp who gathered and published it, including the present edition of the “Thesaurus...” Lipsius 152. Brunet II, p. 1653. Handsome copy in a very good condition.

- - First Italian edition. Louis Jobert’s (1637-1719) acclaimed manual, “La science des medailles, pour l’instruction de ceux qui commencent à s’appliquer à la connoissance des medaillea antiques & modernes”, first appeared in Paris in 1692/3 (Lucas). It went through several editions, and was translated into the main European languages. Lipsius p. 202. Cf. Brunet III, 549 (listing the French editions of 1715 & 1739). - - First German edition. Juncker’s (1668-1714) work contains not only all the medals concerning Luther, but also those related to other reformers like Brenz, Bucer, Calvin, Melanchton, Menno Symons, Viret, Zwingli, as well as Cromwell, Erasmus, Dürer, etc. Lipsius p. 204. Jackson 1432.

Provenance: Felix Béthune (1857-1901), with the heraldic bookplate bearing the Coat-of-Arms of the Béthune family. It incorporates a shield with 3 stars, a knight’s helmet, and a Baron’s crown decorated with 7 pearls. Held by two lions, the shield is surrounded by a circular motto “nec auro, nec armis” (“not with gold, not by weapons”). Felix Béthune was a member of the National Congress of Belgium, Mayor of the city of Courtrai (Kortrijk), and a Senator. In 1845 he received a knighthood from King Leopold, and in 1855 he became a Baron. In 1866 Pope Pius IX granted him the honorary title of a Roman Catholic Count. Rare.

- - First edition. Ezechiel Freiherr von Spanheim’s (1629-1710) famous dissertation is considered pathbreaking. It went through several editions; in 1671 a second edition was published in Amsterdam by Elsevier, and a third edition, in 2 volumes, one posthumous, was published in London by R. Smith in 1706 and 1717 respectively. Spanheim was a giant of 17th-century erudition. He was a contemporary of Leibniz and Locke, and mentioned by contemporaries in the same breath. His last biography “Ein Diplomat und Gelehrter: Ezechiel Spanheim, 1629-1710, mit Anhang: Aus dem Briefwechsel zwischen Spanheim und Leibniz”, by Victor Loewe, was published in 1924, in Berlin. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. Some marginal and interlinear annotations in neat old hand. Hardcover, contemporary full calf, new spine rather unprofessionally made, first inner hinge strengthened, no endpapers. Fine, crisp interior.

Provenance: Felix Béthune (1857-1901), with the heraldic bookplate bearing the Coat-of-Arms of the Béthune family. It incorporates a shield with 3 stars, a knight’s helmet, and a Baron’s crown decorated with 7 pearls. Held by two lions, the shield is surrounded by a circular motto “nec auro, nec armis” (“not with gold, not by weapons”). Felix Béthune was a member of the National Congress of Belgium, Mayor of the city of Courtrai (Kortrijk), and a Senator. In 1845 he received a knighthood from King Leopold, and in 1855 he became a Baron. In 1866 Pope Pius IX granted him the honorary title of a Roman Catholic Count. Shelf label and neat contemporary annotation to first paste-down.

Pp. 212, (4), plus 25 plates numbered “A” and I-XXIV; 347, (1), plus 32 plates numbered XXV-LVI; 416, (4), plus 28 plates numbered LVII-LXXXV. Vignette illustrations throughout the text. Hardcover, large paper copies bound in half cloth and marbled paper over boards, a little edgeworn, paper label (chipped) to each spine, short nicks to blank margin of few leaves in one volume. In a very good, clean and well preserved condition. Overall an excellent set.

- - First edition. Annales de l’Académie d’archéologie de Belgique. A newspaper clip, tipped-in onto verso of first prelim of first volume, announces the appearance of this first part of the work. The short article specifies the contents of this volume and pays extra attention to the plates. They depicts 1018 Obverse and Reverse of the described coins, and were engraved in the atelier of G. Lavaletten. Their preparation, it says, cost the author “a couple of thousands of Francs”. The volume could be purchased, directly at the author’s residence in Bruxelles, for the amount of 20 Francs. OCLC lists 10 sets worldwide, most of which, however, are incomplete. KVK adds National Library of the Netherlands; Union Catalogs of Norway, Italy, Northern Germany, and Swedish Libraries; National Library of France; Austrian National Library; Library Network of Western Switzerland. There is one set in Bodleian, one set in the British Library. Elsewhere, the set is extreemly scarce.
