- - Various printing. Appendix ca. 1952. The fine technique of gravure printing (Kupfertiefdruck, Rakeltiefdruck), developed by Karl Klic (1841-1927), is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure, terms which describe another process. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s, and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not, however, until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing, began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process, but kept it secret rather than patenting it, and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards. Provenance: From the private collection of W. E. Hegman, with his bookplate. (Total weight: 15kg).

Stuart,” bound-in in excellent condition. Although Jacobus Stuart’s plan to establish a Dutch settlement in the Lydenburg district of South Africa did not materialize, it gave rise to the publication of his book about the history of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (Transvaal) and its inhabitants. Here he gives a detailed account of his efforts to gain the support of the Transvaal Volksraad and citizens of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Groningen for his ambitious project. Stuart portrays the “Hollandsche Afrikanen” in South Africa as having archetypical virtues similar to those of the Old Testament’s People of Israel, the first Christians in the New Testament, and the Dutch heroes of the 17th century. Stuart represents these African Dutch as peace-loving people with a simple, Christian way of living which places the patriarchal family in its centre.
