- - First edition. A Dedication Copy, with an autograph dedication to the orientalist John Shakespear, “With the Author’s Compliments,” on first free endpaper. The present work is the first volume, complete in itself, of Miscellaneous Papers on Scientific Subjects. Initially published as a single-volume work, it was so well received that the project consequently progressed to a 3-volume series (1837-68). Thomas Seymour Burt (1805-1890), Captain in the Bengal Engineers, Major of Engineers in the Spanish Service, was a dedicated explorer and a prolific writer. Among his books are Narrative of a Late Steam Voyage from England to India (1840); Account of an Excursion in Search of Ancient Inscriptions (1847); A Metrical Epitome of the History of England (1852); Poems Consisting of Tales from the Classics (1853); Account of a Voyage to India, via the Mediterranean (1859); The History of England, from the Earliest Records (1886). He edited Observations on the Curiosities of Nature (1836). Scarce. COPAC locates this volume in British Library only. Ellis published later her “The Fair Moon of Bath” (New York, 1908). An extremely rare copy of the first edition in the original binding.

Bound in the original publisher’s card wrappers, both sides with a decorative frame, and with a central ornamental illustration embossed in black, wraps bit marked, spine worn, stain on back cover. With neat, contemporary inscription on first flyleaf. A very good, wide-margined copy, well preserved in the original state.

- - First edition. A good copy of the first Sanskrit grammar to appear in Germany, and a unique example of printing art. Lacking an access to any Sanskrit types, Frank could not print the book in letterpress and had to use lithography, a technique usually reserved for the printing of illustrations. Typographically it is unique that the entire text, both the Latin and the Sanskrit, were transferred to stone by hand. Very scarce. Unsophisticated copies in the original binding are practically unavailable.

- - First edition. A PRESENTATION COPY, presented by the Secretary of State in Council of India, State Office, London, with a bookplate to that effect. And with the contemporary inscriptions, “Presented to Mr. C. Baumgarten, July 19, 1887”, and another one, signed by the recipient, “Received by me Oct. 1, 1887 (...)”, all on first paste-down. George Abraham Grierson (1851-1941). A British civil servant, a Fellow of the British Academy, he spent much of his life in British India. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1873 and was in charge of the Linguistic Survey of India from 1898. He was responsible for producing the monumental Linguistic Survey of India, an important work in the history of sociolinguistics research in India, which took 30 years to complete and was published in 11 volumes (1903-1928). Scarce.

Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine (1790-1869) was a French writer, poet, and politician, member of the Académie française. His “Voyage en Orient” was first published in 1835. John Lloyd Stephens (1805-1852), “the American Traveler”, was an attorney, explorer, and writer. He was a pivotal figure in the rediscovery of Maya civilization throughout Middle America and in the planning of the Panama railroad. Howard Malcom (1799-1879), clergyman and missionary, is still regarded today as an important leader of the Baptist Church. He began his career as a Baptist missionary to foreign countries in 1835, and travelled to missions in Hindustan, Burma, Siam, China, and Africa. He wrote some of his most noteworthy literature about his missionary travels. In 1839 he published “Travels in South-Eastern Asia, Embracing Hindustan, Malaya, Siam, and China”. The present fourth volume forms the first section of this work, and is published here for the first time separately. “Travels in Hindustan, Malaya, Siam, and China” forms the second section of “Travels in South-Eastern Asia”, is equally published here for the first time separately, and consequently completes the work.

Mitchell (1910-1986) first went to Japan after the war, eventually residing there for 35 years. He was prominently involved in the collection of woodblock prints, and became especially notable for collection and classifying Japanese picture books (ehon). He retired to Glendale, California, in 1983.

The Yokohama Archives of History contain over 250,000 Yokohama-related materials from the Edo period to the Taisho-early Showa era. Initially planned to comprise 3 volumes only, the catalogue eventually was published in 4 volumes and is including a Supplement and an Index.

- - First edition. Hon. Lewis Strange Wingfield (1842-1891). Among the many areas of the world visited by nineteenth century Englishmen, none was more intriguing or alluring than the Far East. Between 1800 and 1900 a series of male and female travellers journeyed by land through India and on by ship to China and Japan. Wingfield’s travelogue covers, beside China, also Japan and the Philippines. Very rare. KVK does not locate any copy outside of the UK in all major European institutional libraries. COPAC locates National Library of Scotland; School of Oriental & African Studies; Cambridge; Trinity College Dublin; and Oxford only. Two copies in British Library.
