With numerous contemporary trade advertisements. Original pictorial wrappers. In a very good condition. A blemish or two; chipped corner of one leaf neatly re-mended; but overall an excellent copy.

- - First edition. Published by the weekly “Gelderland in Woord en Beeld” as a tribute to the Dutch army, celebrating its glory and courage in a fantastic array of fine images. All units of the Army are represented, and images include training, daily life, new equipment and weaponry. Interesting is the inclusion of the 4 handsome colour plates, printed in gravure after original paintings by Hoynck van Papendrecht. Colour gravure plates are much less common than monochromatic, much more complex to produce. The fine technique of gravure printing (Kupfertiefdruck, Rakeltiefdruck), developed by Karl Klic (1841-1927), is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure, terms which describe another process. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s, and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not, however, until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing, began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process, but kept it secret rather than patenting it, and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards.

- - First Dutch edition, translated from the French. Abraham Jean Arnaud Gerlach, was born in 1871 in Groningen, died in 1906. He received his education at the Koninklijke Militaire Academie, graduating as Lieutenant of the Artillery. As Colonel he later had a long teaching career at the same academy, and contributed regularly to military studies and publications. In 1859 he published in Zalt-Bommel and Paris his “Fastes Militaires des Indes-Orientales Néerlandaises.” A year later, on March 30, 1860, he sent a copy of this book to Maréchal Comte Randon, Marshall of France, writing: “I request Your Excellency to be willing to accept this copy of the Military annals of the Dutch East-Indies (...) and to be my interpreter, bringing it at the feet of His Majesty the Emperor of the French, so that His Majesty would deign to accept a copy of my book.” Randon, apparently, did not fulfil this wish, but kept the copy for himself. The book, together with Gerlach’s hand-written and signed letter, is offered by us as well.

- - First edition. This copy is a Presentation Copy from the Author to Maréchal Comte Randon, Marshall of France. With an Autograph Letter, signed, hand-written in ink in a very neat hand by Gerlach, signed by himself and dated March 2, 1860, addressed to the Maréchal. It comprises a large leaf of paper folded into a four-page document (last page blank), with 47 lines of text, date, and signature. “I request Your Excellency to be willing to accept this copy of the Military annals of the Dutch East-Indies,” Gerlach opens his letter, written in French. Expressing his appreciation to Randon’s military achievements, he begs that the book will be presented to His Majesty the Emperor of the French, continuing, “Voilà monsieur le Maréchal ce qui me porte à vous offrir ce travail et à vous prier d’être mon interprète auprès de l’Auguste chef du peuple français pour que Sa Majesté daigne accepter un exemplaire de mon livre.” The letter, in exceptionally fine condition though a bit foxed, is preserved in pH-balanced, acid-free archival paper. Jacques Louis César Alexandre, Maréchal Comte Randon, born 25 March, 1795 in Grenoble, died 16 January, 1871 in Geneva. A French general and statesman, Marshal of France during the Second Empire. Began his military career at an early age. In 1838 he was appointed Commander of the African Jagers, and fought for ten years against the Arabs, becoming in 1847 a Lieutenant General. In 1851 he became Governor-General of Algeria, a position he held until 1858. On 18 March, 1856 he became Marshal of France. From 1859 to 1867 he served as Minister of War. Retired from public life in 1870, and died a year later. The author, Abraham Jean Arnaud Gerlach, was born in 1871 in Groningen. He received his education at the Koninklijke Militaire Academie, graduating as Lieutenant of the Artillery. As Colonel he later had a long teaching career at the same academy, and contributed regularly to military studies and publications. He translated his “Fastes militaires des Indes...” into Dutch, and published it in Zalt-Bommel and Paris in 1874-75 as the three-volume set “Neerlands heldenfeiten in Oost-Indië”. He died in 1906. The importance of this work is remarkable: OCLC lists no less than 20 major North American libraries who keep a copy, including Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Washington, Princeton, and Columbia university libraries, as well as NYPL. A rare copy with fine provenance.

These two maps are present here with the usual tears along folds and with the foxing due to the paper quality. Almost all of the 32 other maps are in fine condition; about 2-3 are with tears. Overall a nice set.

49 LINTUM, C. te., J. Hoynck van Papendrecht, P. J. Blok. Onze Schutter-Vendels en Schutterijen van vroeger en later tijd, 1550-1908. Een historisch album met aquarellen en geschiedkundigen text. ’s-Gravenhage, Van Stockum, (1910).

Oblong quarto. Pp. 22 (text). Plus 50 plates (one of which is folding double-page) and 50 leaves of captions and explanations, printed on verso only, with interleaving tissue guards. With 34 text illustrations. Pictorial title-page printed in colour. Hardcover, original illustrated cloth, illustrated spine. In fine internal condition. (Few spots; minor rubbing to corner tips.) Overall an excellent copy, with all plates in exceptionally fine state of preservation.

- - Noteworthy is the technique in which the fine plates in this book are produced. The monochromatic plates are printed in collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. The colour plates are not chromolithographs as it is sometimes erratically assumed. At the end of the 19th century the term “chromotypograph”, implying colour printed from raised metal, as type is, was used for colour prints which made use of metal relief blocks. It is indeed the process used in this book; the colour plates were printed from etched metal blocks, a relief method rather than planographic.

51 LOOY, P. van, and P. van Looy Jr. Battleship “Waterloo”’s Anchor: 19th Century Tinted Lithograph Print. Arnhem, Gouda Quint, 1881.

Fine original 19th century tinted lithograph. Image size ca. 160 mm X 220 mm. Paper size ca. 240 mm X 315 mm. Artists’ and Publisher’s names printed below image. In overall fine condition (some spots in margin; miniature triangular stamp just touching image area).

- - Battleships “Waterloo” and “Wassenaer” left Holland in January 1827, having on board a total of 3,000 troops of the Dutch Expedition Force to the East Indies. Though the giant anchor managed to save the “Waterloo” en-route, fighting a severe storm, the death toll among the Force’s soldiers during their service in the East Indies was horrible: only 300 returned home. Later, the anchor was brought to the Netherlands as a gift to the King. In 1880, the artists father and son van Looy made a stone lithograph of it. It was printed by the famous stone-lithographers firm of S. Lankhout & Co., of The Hague, and published in 1881 by Publisher Gouda Quint, of Arnhem.

Contenant l’origine & progres d’icelle, les stratagemes de guerre, oppugnations & expugnations des villes & forteresses, aussi la barbare Tyrannie & cruauté de l’Espaignol, & Espaignolisez. Side-notes, index of events. Set in Roman and Italic types. - - First French edition. In 1582 the Netherlands were still ruled by Spain and “Histoire des Troubles”, a clandestine publication, was published with no imprint and with its author using a pseudonym. On its title page, however, instead of a printer’s device, a proud 4-line cry-freedom, “Belgium Libertate Parta, Reviviscit” is typographically set. It is very unlikely that such a book was printed in the Netherlands under Alva’s rule. It is also rather unlikely that it was printed in London, where many Dutch sought refuge, considering the strict control on all English presses at the time. The book was probably printed by a clandestine press in Emden, one of several refugee presses centred there, which set to produce anti-Spanish propaganda and smuggle it into the occupied Low Countries. No author has signed the book, but the preface is signed, with the customary “Vostre treshumble & obeyssant seruiteur”, by one “Theophile D. L.”. Who he was, remains a mystery. In 1579 “Chronyc Historie der Nederlandtscher Oorlogen” was published. This was a translation of Adam Henricpetri’s “Niderlendischer erster Kriegen Emporungen”. The translation included extended additional material which occupied two extra volumes. This material, however, was not by Henricpetri but by his translator, one who signed “Theophilus idiota”. For some time it was believed that Philips van Marnix, Lord of St. Aldegonde, was behind this pseudonym, but this attribution is no longer widely accepted. Recent assumptions attribute the work to Gilbert Roy (Regius), who is known to adopt the pseudonym “Theophilus idiota”. Het Instituut voor Nederlandse Geschiedenis (ING) in The Hague attributes the work to Jean François le Petit, who also wrote the 2-volume “La grande chronique ancienne et moderne de Hollande, Zélande ...” (Dordrecht 1601). Another, widely accepted attribution is to Carolus Ryckewaert, a Dutch refugee minister who fled to Norwich. Throughout his career Ryckewaert used the pseudonym “Theophilus”. The letters “D. L.” which appear in the French version are ambiguous and have been interpreted in a number of ways to support the attributions to both Ryckewaert and Roy. “Chronyc Historie” is of major importance to Dutch historiography, representing a detailed early work on the revolt. Although violently anti-Catholic, the book gives a reliable account of the early years of the struggle. But it is the updated, revised, and enlarged French “Histoire des Troubles” that represent the most detailed work on the period, and the only edition to describe in detail the events of that fateful year, 1581. A new and final version of the book appeared in 1583. Claiming to be a second French edition, it was in fact a pirated edition, completely rewritten with a new historiography of events set in a strong pro-Spanish light, published to deceive readers into thinking it is the original work. [For further references see B. A. Vermaseren, ‘Gilb. A very important book on the Dutch revolt against Spain. Very rare. OCLC does not locate a single copy worldwide. Bodleian records a copy (attributed to Carolus Ryckewaert). KVK lists only 3 other copies worldwide. Not in the National Library of the Netherlands.

127 (WIJNOLDY DANIËLS, TH. J.). Stelling van Amsterdam. Herinnerings album aan de mobilisatie van het Nederlandsche leger. Amsterdam, De Bijenkorf, 1916.

First edition. Excellent collection of original photographs, published here for the first time, the majority never republished. They are mostly group photographs of the men called for the defence of the Netherlands in the Great War. The array of commercial advertisements of the period is of particular value for its own merit. Rare survivor of an exceedingly scarce publication in a very good state of preservation.
