99 KOHLSCHÜTTER, Pauline. Frauenglück. Bilder aus dem weiblichen Leben. Berlin, Kunstverlag Grandt, n.d. (ca. 1880).

Crown quarto. Pictorial album containing 11 thick card leaves. First card is an illustrated title-leaf printed in collotype, with a list of contents on verso. Each of the other 10 cards has a mounted plate laid-down within ornamental border; titled at head, captioned at bottom, each card has a different poem. Seven plates are printed in collotype; the other 3 are silver-gelatine prints. The cards are kept in the original hardcover cloth-covered case by Hübel & Denck of Leipzig. Upper board fully illustrated, printed in light blue, black, and gilt, repeating title-leaf illustration; lower board blind stamped, bevelled edges, interior covered with golden foliage paper. In fine condition. (Small contemporary paper label inside; light spotting to first card.) A most charming set, beautifully preserved. Excellent.

First edition. The prospects of domestic happiness, love, courtship, marriage, and motherhood are illustrated here in ten original paintings by Pauline Kohlschütter. They include the titles: Stille Liebe; Liebeszauber; Verlobung; Trennung; Liebesträumen; Die Braut; Häusliches Glück; Mutterliebe; Abendgebet; Der Mutter Segen. Each image is accompanied by an appropriate poem and one is illustrating the other. The gelatine-silver prints have faded into light sepia, as photographs of that age usually do. The collotypes remained fresh. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. All 11 plates are now preserved within acid-free pH-balanced archival paper. Scarce collectible of a timeless charm, complete.

Duodecimo. Pp. 188, 4 publisher’s catalogue. Set in Gothic type. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher’s purple cloth with yellow lettering, spine-ends rubbed, cloth discoloured. A bright interior in fine condition. Overall an excellent copy.

- - The very scarce Berlin, Weltgeist-Bücher Verlagsgesellschaft edition. Ferdinand Lassalle (1825-1864), a German socialist, was the architect of the German labour movement and founder the German Workers’ Association. He was the first to speak about “the iron law of wages”, defining it as the minimum subsistence pay permitting survival and the raising of children. But the more his revolutionary hopes were disappointed, the more sharply he turned against the middle classes, whose capacity to solve the social question he denied. Lassalle was mortally wounded in 1866 in a duel fought over a lady he intended to marry. “Eine historische Tragödie” was translated into Italian as “Franz von Sickingen. Una tragedia storica” and into English as “Franz von Sickingen: A Tragedy in Five Acts”.

114 LINNAEI, Caroli, Olavo L. Siljeström. [Kongliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i Uppsala]. Acta literaria et scientiarum Sveciae, Anni MDCCXXXVI. Cum figuris aneis. I: Animalia per Sveciam observata. II: Brevis conspectus dissertationis de Lacu Siljan. Upsaliae, Sumtibus Regia Societas Lit. & Scientiarum, impressa, 1736.

Octavo. Pp. 97-210. Contents printed on title-page verso. Plus a finely engraved folding map, “Sion Sillian...”, and a finely engraved plate by Jonas
Silfverling, with insets, bound-in. With text (single words or phrases) in Hebrew and Arabic type explained within the main Latin text. Footnotes. Decorative initial, tail-piece. Hardcover, modern cloth. In fine condition (small expert repair to verso of map, head of title; first and last leaves bit edge brittle). Overall an excellent copy.

- - Though the “Acta...” as a whole is dated 1736, Olof [Olavo] Larsson Siljeström’s “Dissertationis de Lacu Siljan” is dated 1730. His famous map “Sion Sillian...” which is bound in this copy, is dated a year earlier, 1729. The “Acta...” was published as a journal of the Kongliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i Uppsala (Royal Society of Sciences at Uppsala). Founded in 1710, the Kungl is perhaps the oldest scholarly society in Sweden. Between 1720-1729 the Society has published its Journal at the name “Acta literaria Sueciae”; from 1730 to 1739 as “Acta literaria et scientiarum Sueciae”; and from 1740 to 1750 as “Acta societatis regiae scientiarum upsaliensis”. After 1773, the Journal was titled “Nova acta societatis regiae scientiarum Upsaliensis”. The “Acta...” is among the first and most important publications the Society has published. Survivors are very scarce: OCLC (21548402) locates just 3 copies worldwide (Brown, Harvard, Yale), all runs of unspecified completeness or incomplete. For further reference see also: Jeremias David Reuss’ (1750-1837) extended index of articles published by Scholarly Societies: “Repertorium Commentationum a Societatibus Litterariis Editarum, Secundum Disciplinarum Ordinem.” Gottingae, 1801-1821, (Reprint edition: New York, Burt Franklin, 1961). - - Daniel Neal (1678-1743), English historian, minister, and Nonconformist divine, was educated at the Merchant Taylors School, and at the universities of Utrecht and Leiden. In 1704 he became assistant minister, and in 1706 sole minister, of an independent congregation worshipping in Aldersgate Street, and afterwards in Jewin Street, London, where he remained almost until his death. In 1720 he published his “History of New England”, which obtained for its author the honorary degree of M.A. from Harvard college. He also undertook to assist Dr. John Evans in writing a history of Nonconformity. Evans, however, died in 1730, and, making use of his papers for the period before 1640, Neal wrote the whole of the work himself. This “History of the Puritans” deals with the time between the Reformation and 1689. The first volume appeared in 1732, and the fourth and last in 1738. “The History of the Puritans” was edited, in five volumes, by Dr Joshua Toulmin (1740-1815), who added a life of Neal in 1797. This was reprinted in 1822, and an edition in two volumes was published in New York in 1844. With the small oval stamp of New College London.

Plans, diagrams, colour illustrations, advertisements. Hardcover, original blue cloth, gilt, with dust-jacket (this very good with minor edge blemishes.) In fine condition. Excellent copy, remarkably well preserved.

First edition. Contrary to the prevailing assumption, the mounted plates in this edition are not actual photographs but fine halftone offset prints, printed on quality glossy paper which resembles silver gelatine print but surpasses its quality and tonal range. The colour plates are reproductions of hand-coloured photographs and are printed in the same technique as the monochromatic plates. ADDED: original “Kontroll-Nummer” paper ticket, verifying the authenticity and quality of the album, loosely inserted.

154 ROBIDA, Albert. Le vingtième siècle. [FIRST EDITION, IN ORIGINAL BINDING]. Paris, Georges Decaux, 1883.

Quarto. Pp. 404. Plus a total of 50 plates, all printed on thick leaves bound- or tipped-in, as follows: 10 fine tinted collotype plates, including frontispiece, all with facing tissue guard. Noteworthy is the transfer of the collotypes, an intaglio technique, to stone or zinc for printing lithographically, a planographic technique. Plus 8 finely hand-coloured plates; plus 32 Gillotype plates (one bit creased at fore-edge). With hundreds of illustrations throughout the text. Half-title with fine printer’s device on verso, title-page in red and black with illustrated vignette. Hardcover, original richly illustrated light-green cloth, printed in black, heightened with red dye added by hand, with massive gilt light-beam projected from a fish-shape zeppelin on the back cover. Illustration spreads over spine as well. All edges gilt; chalked lime endpapers. In good condition. (Spine-ends and corners rubbed; inner hinge and a gutter cracked; clipped corner from blank endpaper; foxing, pronounced at times; two leaves bit creased; occasional faint dampmark; tear to one tissue guard.) Though not free of flaws, a nice copy with all plates in a very good condition.

- - First edition, first printing, probably December 1882. “Le vingtième siècle”, Robida’s classic in its original, elaborately illustrated cloth binding, is very rare. The first of Robida’s futuristic novels, it appeared in 1882 in 50 instalments. The prevailing assumption is that the first book edition was published in 1833, though some indications mention December 1832 as a probable publishing date (see: “Albert Robida (1848-1926), visionnaire du XXe siècle”). Immediately, a second edition was published in 1833, having the title: “Roman d’une parisienne d’après demain”. This edition is today more readily available. Further editions were published in 1884 (“La conquéte de l’air”), in 1893 (by Editions Montgrédien, incorporating “La vie électrique”), and in 1895 (by Editions Dentu). The first 1883 edition appeared as a reprint in 1981 (Slatkine) and again, in 1991 (Taillander). Just a little has been written on Robida in French, much less in English. None of his novels have been translated into English. Philippe Brum (Editions Promodis, 1984) provides a listing of Robida’s publications and illustrations. Further reading can be found in “Albert Robida’s 20th Century”, (Science-Fiction Studies, 10, 1983); and in Horn’s “Handbook of French Popular Culture”, (Greenwood Press, 1991). Exceedingly scarce first edition, first printing of a classic, in original cloth binding. Not a single copy in OCLC.

Henri Charles Glaude [Claude] Jacob van der Mandere (1883-1959) was a journalist and philologist. Preserved in pH-balanced, acid-free Renaissance archival paper by Light Impressions.
