In a very good condition (dedication to first free endpaper). A well preserved copy, neat interior with fine set of plates.
- - Beautifully illustrated. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. The beautifully reproduced early colour photographs were not printed in offset lithography but from relief metal blocks. A somewhat laborious process, it could yield exceptionally nice results if done with great attention to detail, and the plates here are a good example for such. Scarce.

- - First edition. A most attractive set. Joseph Arthur, Comte de Gobineau (1816-1882). Diplomat, orientalist, a novelist of distinction. While he is perhaps most known for arguing that racial composition determines the fate of civilization, being called the “intellectual father” of Nietzsche, Gobineau’s most concrete scholarly effort was in the field of cuneiform studies. In those years in which Hincks, Rawlinson, and Oppert were gradually realizing that the Akkadian language could not account for all ancient cuneiform texts and for the inner structure of cuneiform writing, Gobineau attacked the three of them in his essay on the Lecture des textes cuneiformes, which he expanded in the two volumes of “Traité des écritures cuneiformes”, which is presented here. Gobineau argued that cuneiform texts were sacred writings, written in a cryptic form for “talismanic” purposes, and that if one reads them with the system of transposition of letters employed by the Hebrew Cabbalists, they proved to be written in Arabic. He produced a marvel of combinatory devices by which the texts not only proved to be alliterative poetry conforming to strict rules of prosody, but also could be read backwards and forwards, so that what was a blessing read as a curse in the opposite direction. The present set contains: Tome I: Livre I. L’écriture cunéiforme assyrienne; Livre II. L’écriture cunéiforme zende; Livre III. L’écriture cunéiforme Huzwaresh. Tome II: Livre IV. Commentaire. Very rare. KVK locates 2 copies only (National Library of France and Library Network of Western Switzerland). Rich’s (1787-1821) “Memoir on the Ruins of Babylon” was first published in the “Fundgruben des Orients” in 1813, event which “marks the hour when Assyriology saw the light” (Pallis 51). Thomas Maurice (1754-1824), assistant librarian to the British Museum, dedicated his commentary “to the Right Honourable Charles Philip Yorke, in grateful testimony of accumulated favours, these pages, retrospective on the history, and early progress in science, of a most ancient people”.

Hardcover, bound in the original publisher’s red cloth, embossed in gilt, spine gilt, cloth ribbon marker; with dust-jacket (this very good). Book is in mint, fresh-new condition (ownership signature). Excellent copy, beautifully preserved.
- - First edition. A remarkable production with superb gravure reproductions. Interesting is the inclusion of the handsome colour plates. Colour gravure plates are much less common than monochromatic, much more complex to produce. The fine technique of gravure printing (Kupfertiefdruck, Rakeltiefdruck), developed by Karl Klic (1841-1927), is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure, terms which describe another process. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s, and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not, however, until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing, began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process, but kept it secret rather than patenting it, and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards.
