50 GUISCHARDT, Charles. Lyon, Bruyset, 1760.
Two volumes. Crown quarto. Pp. xvi, 123, (1); 153, (3) verso blank. (Page 153 erratically numbered 313.) Plus a total of 21 copperplates engravings, printed on fine handmade paper: 15 fold-out plates in the first volume and 6 in the second volume, one of which is a large folding map. Title-page of each volume printed in red and black and decorated with a small ornamental device. Half-title to each volume. Ornamental head- and tail-pieces. Footnotes, side-notes. Set in double columns. Hardcover, uniformly bound in contemporary half mottled calf and sprinkled boards, spines gilt ruled and numbered, handsome gilt title-label to each. Silken marker bands. - - “Cet ouvrage est remarquable par son érudition et sa clarté.” (This work is remarkable in its scholarship and its clearness.) - B. Colson, “L’art de la Guerre”. Noteworthy is the general disregard of the fact that there are two, entirely different issues of the Paris edition under this same imprint. The first issue followed the 1758 The Hague edition, and was published similarly in a rather thick 2-volume octavo, with the first volume encompassing 318 pages, and the second 384 pages. But then Bruyset thought better. The entire work was reset in elegant and practical double-column format, allowing the first volume to elegantly hold the complete text in mere 123 pages, and the second volume in 153 pages. The title-page was printed in red and black, and the work printed in a generous crown quarto, measuring 26 x 21 cm. The handsome plates could now be bound with only minimum of folding. Furthermore, the strikes of the plates in this issue are stronger and richer. Copies printed in this handsome format are now most uncommon. See: Jähns, Geschichte der Kriegswissenschaften, pp. 1824-29. Chevalier Folard published his “Histoire de Polybe” in 6 volumes (Paris 1727-30). Eventually it became a 7-volume work (Amsterdam 1751), to be followed by an abridged edition. “Histoire de Polybe” was immensely influential, translated in its full size into several languages.

(Light pencil marginalia here and there in neat contemporary hand.) Excellent set in exceptionally fine state of preservation, with numerous leaves still unopened.
- - First edition, signed. Each of the 12 volumes is signed by the author. Complete, with all 253 lithograph plates present as called for, bringing together a voluminous visual collection with a total of over 1,500 exceptionally fine, numbered illustrations. Several Dutch lithographers joined forces to produce this large number of plates, and we managed to identify two: the firm Döhrn in Rotterdam, and this of A. Bogaerts in Breda, who from 1881 produced the great majority of the work. The 12 volumes cover in minute detail the task, duty, and technique of the field engineer and tracker, dealing with materials, earthwork, encampment, field fortification, entrenchment, the construction of various bridges (floating, roller, rafts, footbridge, cage, etc.), communication, mine laying and clearing, and more. The last volume serves as a summary. J. H. A. Mijsberg contributed to the last two volumes. The author, General Cornelis Jacobus Snijders (1852-1939), studied military engineering at the Royal Military Academy in Breda, graduating as Second Lieutenant of the Korps Ingenieurs, Mineurs en Sappeurs. As General he became on July 31, 1914 the Chief of the General Staff of the Dutch military, commanding both army and navy in the eve of the First World War. In 1932, at the age of 80, he entered politics, becoming head of the right wing, antidemocratic Verbond voor Nationaal Herstel party. Snijders was a prolific writer. Together with R. Dufour, he published in 1927 a thorough study of the outbreak of the First World War, a work which was critisized as pro-German. He wrote several important military study books and published regularly in “De Militaire Spectator” and “De Ingenieur”. Among his most important studies of fortification and field engineering are “Veldversterkingskunst” (Breda, 1899); and “Duurzame en tijdelijke versterkingskunst” (Breda, 1901). Together with J. Mijsberg he published a three-volume later-edition of the “Handboek der pionierkunst” (Schiedam, 1903-1908). A lovely set of an important, thorough manual of military engineering, extensively illustrated, preserved in excellent state. Single volumes are scarce; a complete set is very rare and seldom seen. The library of the Legermuseum in Delft has only the first 4 volumes in its collection, and they are of the 2nd edition. Also the Bibliotheek Koninklijke Militaire Academie, Breda, records in all the Ministry of Defence’s libraries in the Netherlands several copies of different editions but not a single complete set of any edition as such. Both OCLC and KVK do not record a single copy worldwide. Not in the National Library of the Netherlands, OLIS, nor Bodleian.

- - In this famous work de Ville (1596-1656 or 1657) concentrates on basic designs as starting point for detailed examination of practical questions, showing how established principles have to be adapted to the practical exigencies of any actual site. He discusses in detail matters such as length of line defence, length of flanks, casemates, size of the bastions, etc. Doing this, he quotes continually from existing practice, acknowledging this as a a matter of fact. Noteworthy, de Ville himself produced the fine, clear illustrations for the book. The 1672 Amsterdam edition, based on the Paris 1666 edition, was the last one to appear. The imprint on the engraved frontispiece, this of Abraham Wolfgang, Amsterdam, is dated 1675; exactly as in all four and only copies which are recorded in OCLC. Excellent copy. Rare.
