24 BAUER, Leonard. Volksleben im Lande der Bibel. Leipzig, Wallmann, 1903.

Octavo. Pp. (vi), 312. Plus 30 halftone photographic plates printed on different paper bound in. With numerous illustrations to the text. Footnotes, chronology, indices. Decorative initials. Set in Gothic type. Hardcover, half cloth and foliate paper-covered boards, title label to spine. Excellent copy in fine condition.

- - First edition. The way the book is illustrated is impressive. The photographs depict various aspects of life and work in “the land of the Bible”. They are ranging from landscapes and general views, identified by place name, through documentation of public events, a pilgrimage or two, to pictures of daily life. People working, cultivating the fields, harvesting, gathering, tending the herds; individually and in groups. There are closer pictures of utensils, cookery, housing. There are several portraits, individual and group, mainly of archetypes, as well as of people socializing. Some of the landscapes are very picturesque; the closer views are clearly intended to be used as studies in anthropology and culture, and to allow clear identification. The excellent drawings often illustrate in minute detail elements shown in the photographic plates, enhancing clarity. Includes a charming chapter on Arabic music, with musical notes, and several lyrics spelled phonetically.

- - First German edition. The superb steel engraved plates are printed here with fine, crisp detail, great subtlety and elegance. Very large, each is printed within a plate-mark on heavy, handmade paper, tipped-in facing a tissue guard. Noteworthy are the artists who produced this work. Most of the original paintings were made by J. D. Woodward and Harry Fenn. Born in England in 1838, Fenn came at the age of 18 to the United States where he has achieved great success as an illustrator of books, was one of the founders of the American Watercolor Society, and has been one of its exhibitors nearly every year since its organization. Some of his best work is contained in “Picturesque America,” “Picturesque Europe,” and “Picturesque Palestine,” on which the present German edition is based. A keen traveller, Fenn has travelled extensively through the United States, Canada, Europe, Egypt, Palestine, and the Sinai Peninsula. Other artists include C. Werner and H. A. Harper. The engravings were executed by numerous outstanding craftsmen, noteworthy among them are C. Bertrand and E. Brandard, and Alfred Krausse. The plates come from at least three different presses, these of A. Schuler, J. Niederbühl, and W. Thielicke are the most prominent. The result is impressive, and the quality of the prints surpasses that of the English edition. The numerous lovely and lively wood-engraved illustrations complete this celebration of word and image. Old institutional bookplate and markings. A handsome set. [Note: total weight over 10 kg].

- - First edition. With tintedviews of Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Jericho, Jordan River, Mount of Olives, Bethany, Mountain Tabor, and other views, as well as several church interiors. The fine technique of gravure printing, developed by Karl Klic (1841-1927), is often referred to erratically as photogravure, heliogravure, Kupfertiefdruck, or Rakeltiefdruck, terms which refer to another technique. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s, and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not, however, until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing, began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process, but kept it secret rather than patenting it, and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards.

87 LEWIN, Thomas. The Siege of Jerusalem by Titus. With the Journal of a Recent Visit to the Holy City, and a General Sketch of the Topography of Jerusalem From the Earliest Times Down to the Siege. [CAPTAIN CONDER’S R.E. COPY]. London, Longman, Green, Sabers, 1863.

Three parts in one volume. Royal octavo. Paginated consecutively. Pp. xv, (i), 493. With two divisional titles. Plus 2 engraved plates by Edward Weller, printed on different paper bound-in, and a large, hand-coloured folding lithograph map of Jerusalem, based on Tobler’s map, with inset plan of the Castle of David, loosely inserted as issued; a short split to folds’ intersection. With 14 (counted as 13) plans and illustrations to the text. Footnotes, appendix, index. Hardcover, original decorated pebbled blue cloth, by Westleys of London, bit discoloured, sides blind panelled, upper cover gilt stamped, spine richly decorated in gilt, upper joint neatly mended, minor wear to extremities; chalked endpapers, bookplate. Nice copy in a very good condition.

- - First edition. Captain Conder’s, R.E. copy, with a memorandum in manuscript, addressed to him by Thomas Chaplin, loosely inserted. It consists of a single leaf of paper measuring ca. 20 X 13 cm with 19 lines of text in manuscript and Chaplin’s signature. Dated at top “March 17, 1882, Jerusalem” it opens: “Returned to Captain Conder R.E. the following property of the Palestine Expl. Fund.” It then describes the list of items, specifying item 3 as: “Lewin, Siege of Jerusalem”. Folded into three, it is addressed on the back by the same hand in manuscript: “Captain Conder R. E.” (Overall fine, with 2 tears.) Dr. Thomas J. Chaplin (1830-1904) held the position of director of the British Hospital for the Jews in Jerusalem for a quarter of a century. During these years he acted to improve the medical situation in the city and engaged in scientific researches in a variety of fields. By virtue of his achievements and his gracious personality, the Jewish people in Jerusalem named Chaplin as “The Great English Doctor”. Lieutenant Claude Reignier Conder, R.E. (1848-1910) was appointed in 1872 to the command of the Palestine Exploration Fund’s Survey of Western Palestine. Two years later he was joined by his friend, Lieutenant Horatio Kitchener (1850-1916). Together with Sergeants Black and Armstrong, R.E., they continued the work of the Survey until their camp at Safed was attacked by the Muslim inhabitants of the town. Kitchener bravely defended his superior but both officers and several other members of the party were seriously injured, and the work of the Survey was halted. In 1881 Captain Conder returned to carry out the Survey of Eastern Palestine. Although his work came to an end in 1882, Colonel Conder continued to study the geography, history, and archaeology of Palestine, and was the author of many books dealing with these subjects. The survey occupied seven years in the field, and more than two years in addition were spent in the preparation of the work for publication. The whole of the surveyed area covered more than 6,000 square miles. The area was mapped, and natural features of the country were catalogued. The surveys have established a general index to the native names of about 9,000 places, and identified Biblical and other historical sites. Photographs, sketches, and other illustrations were made and collected, laying a sound foundation for every kind of research in Palestine connected with topography. The author, Thomas Lewin, was born in London in 1805, educate at Worchester College, Oxford and at Lincoln’s Inn, London, from where he graduated as a barrister. Beside books on the history of the Holy Land he wrote about law. He died in 1877. This work consists of three parts, and includes Lewin’s “A Sketch of Jerusalem” which was originally published in 1861. Facing a rather heavy criticism on his attempt to describe the city without ever visiting her, Lewin decided a year later to “correct the error” and in September 1862 travelled to the Holy City. An account of this trip is published here as the second part of the book. Excellent work, a fascinating interweaving of a study of topography, a pilgrim’s travelogue, and the story of the military campaign at the last days of Jerusalem. Tobler, 202. Very scarce. OCLC lists just six copies in the United Kingdom - in Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, King’s College, Queen’s, and Manchester University Libraries. KVK locates 4 other copies: one in Italy; one in Canada; two in Germany. A most uncommon copy with fine provenance.

91 MANNING, Samuel. “Those Holy Fields.” Palestine Illustrated by Pen and Pencil. New and Improved Edition. London, Religious Tract Society, n.d. (1874).

Crown quarto. Pp. 223, 8 fully illustrated publisher’s catalogue. Engraved frontispiece with facing tissue guard. Profusely illustrated throughout with numerous engravings, many of which are full-page plates printed on side one of the leaf only; engraved vignettes; head- and tail-pieces; several (full-page) maps and plans; engraved elaborate first initial. Footnotes, indices. Hardcover, original richly gilt pictorial cloth, decorative gilt spine; blind ruled lower board. All edges gilt. Lovely floral pattern endpapers. Overall very good. (Some marginal stains to first few leaves; hinges mended with bleeding of old glue staining inner margin of first 3 leaves; some blemishes, rubbing to cloth on spine extremities.) Good copy in handsome binding.

The selection of images, the design and layout of this edition vary greatly from that of later editions, with the book divided into 3 sections: Southern Palestine, or Judaea; Central Palestine, or Samaria; Northern Palestine, or Galilee. The charming illustrations are wood-engravings and photoxylographs (wood engravings from photographs); the original pen-and-pencil drawings are reproduced here in Gillotage, a method of printing from etched metal relief block. They are all of high quality, contributing greatly to the charm of this classic. Rev. Samuel Manning was a clergyman who, like many of his contemporaries, acquired his great knowledge of the Holy Land entirely from a study of the Bible. In 1873, however, he travelled to Palestine so he could “compare the Land and the Book”. Upon returning he published his travelogue, though one can hardly imagine he managed to visit and study in detail all the regions he describes. Noteworthy, some of the illustrations are indeed true representation of the place, engraved after original photographs. A lovely book.

The survey occupied seven years in the field, and more than two years in addition were spent in the preparation of the work for publication. The whole of the surveyed area covered more than 6,000 square miles. The area was mapped, and natural features of the country - its hills and valleys, springs, wells, cisterns, water courses and streams, its towns, villages, ruins, and highways - were catalogued. The surveys have established a general index to the native names of about 9,000 places, and identified Biblical and other historical sites. Photographs, sketches, and other illustrations were made and collected, laying a sound foundation for every kind of research in Palestine connected with topography.

(Wraps bit thumbed, marked; small oval stamp effaced from each volume’s prelims, small number-label to each cover.) Overall, two excellent copies.

- - First edition. An unnumbered copy from a Limited Edition of one thousand. A visual celebration indeed, combining excellent photography, superb printing, and a sensitive editor’s eye. Remarkable cross-reference between modern iconography and Biblical sources. The fine technique of gravure printing (Kupfertiefdruck, Rakeltiefdruck), developed by Karl Klic (1841-1927), is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure, terms which describe another process.

- - First edition. Three books in one volume, published 1889, 1895, 1890 respectively. Provenance: Noted classicist Dr. Henriëtte Boas’ copy, with her bookplate. Schumacher was the first explorer to survey the regions described here, and his minute and thorough scientific observations, notes, maps, drawings, and sketches were prepared for publication at the request of the Palestine Exploration Fund by his friend, the explorer Guy le Strange. They were published here for the first time. Gottlieb Schumacher (1857) settled at a very young age with his family in Haifa, where his father, a member of the “Temple Association” designed most of the buildings of the German Colony. Following the completion of his engineering studies in Stuttgart, he returned to Haifa and was appointed Chief Engineer for the Province of Akko. He designed many buildings and was a leading figure in civil engineering. One of his most important projects was the survey of the Golan, Hauran, and the Ajlun districts in preparation for the construction of the Damascus-Haifa railway. In the course of this survey he produced the first accurate maps of these regions, along with detailed descriptions of the archaeological remains and the present villages. He published many other reports and books on his discoveries, supported by the Palestine Exploration Fund. With the outbreak of World War I the Templar community left for Germany. Schumacher returned in 1924 to his home on the Carmel, where he died a year later. Although he was born in Ohio, U.S.A., Gottlieb was brought-up and educated as a German. “I beg to through myself on the indulgence of my readers for the defects of style,” he once wrote, “for my work has been perforce written in a language which, though familiar to me, is not my own.” Scarce.

145 WILSON, Charles W. (Editor). Assisted by the Most Eminent Palestine Explorers, Etc. Picturesque Palestine, in Three Volumes. Volumes I-III [COMPLETE]. London, Virtue, (1889).

Three volume set. Complete. Royal quarto (32 x 27 cm). The total number of 33 plates includes four different steel-engraved frontispieces and four different, large steel-engraved title vignette, all printed on heavy paper bound-in, with tissue-guards. The three volumes are illustrated with a total of 429 wood-engraved illustrations, many of which are full-page, all with explanatory captions. Index to each volume. Titles printed in red and black. Hardcover, uniformly bound in the original publisher’s richly decorated green cloth, gilt panelled and lettered, spine gilt, bevelled boards, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. In about fine condition (occasionally some spotting; slight wear to spine ends.) A very handsome set, very well preserved.

- - Second edition, published in three volumes. It does not differ from the first edition, in four volumes, which was published in 1881. The publisher, James Virtue, seeking new marketing opportunities, substitute the line “In Four Volumes” with “In Three Volumes” and did not reissue the fourth volume, devoted to Egypt and Palestine. Other editions followed suit. Appleton of New York has published a two-volume version, rather crowded in comparison with the original, and indeed one that could not match the exceptionally fine, two large folios of the German edition that was published in 1833 under the direction of Georg Ebers and Hermann Guthe. Although it is Wilson who receives all the credit for this monumental work, it is the contribution of the authors whose work he edited that makes this three-volume opus of value. Distinguished Palestine explorers such as Canon Tristram, Charles Warren, M. Rogers, and notably Major Claude Reignier Conder, R.E. (1848-1910), as well as several others created the necessary balance between image and word. The superb steel engraved plates are printed here with fine, crisp detail, subtlety and elegance. Noteworthy are the artists who produced them. Some of his best work is contained in “Picturesque America,” “Picturesque Europe,” and “Picturesque Palestine”. Brandard. The numerous lovely and lively wood-engraved illustrations complete this celebration of word and image. A fine set. [Total weight: 10 kg. Extra postage is required for all destinations].
